Expunging allows users to remove galleries from the default listing and searches. This is most commonly used for duplicate or replaced content.

Additional examples and minor clarifications can be found on the talk page.

How To

Expunging a gallery is handled through a petition system.

Each gallery has a "Petition to Expunge" link on the right side above the images. Any user with mod power 5 or above may start an expunge petition. Otherwise, this forum thread can be used to ask for an expunge to be created on your behalf.

Click The "Petition to Expunge" link to open a list of valid expunge reasons. The user filing the petition must provide a clear explanation, and in most cases a link to the valid gallery.

Once a petition is created, subsequent users with mod power 2 or above may vote for or against it. Votes against should include a reason; votes for may include one optionally. Votes for add to the petition score; votes against reduce it. A user's mod power determines how much their vote contributes (capped at 30; 40 for power-boosted users).

A gallery is expunged when a petition reaches 100 points and remains there for 15 minutes. Once that happens, the petition becomes ACTIVE and the gallery is expunged. A petition may rise above 100, which protects it from later 'against' votes during that 15-minute period.

A gallery may have multiple petitions active at the same time, but not more than one petition for the same expunge reason. If one petition becomes ACTIVE, all other petitions on that gallery are deleted.

Petitions left inactive for more than 7 days are automatically cleared. TODO: confirm? I've seen them survive years..

Appeal an Incorrect Expunge

If an expunge was carried out incorrectly, it may be appealed.

Within the first 7 days after an expunge becomes active, any user with 10 or more mod power may create an appeal petition. After 7 days, only users with the "Galleries Expunging" privilege or gallery moderators may do so.

As with expunge petitions, users may vote for or against an appeal with an optional comment. If the appeal reaches 100 points and remains there for 15 minutes, the expunge is revoked and the gallery is restored.

After a successful appeal, any new expunge petition on that gallery may only be started by users with the "Galleries Expunging" privilege or gallery moderators.

Users who participated in the original expunge petition may not vote on the appeal, though they may create it if they realize the original expunge was incorrect.

Before Expunging

Make sure the gallery is "Visible"; this status is shown on the left-hand side of the gallery.

Reverting and Splitting

Reversion should be requested when an uploader has removed legitimate content from a gallery. Do not expunge such galleries.

• Reverted galleries are locked for updating to prevent further sabotage.

Gallery chain split should be requested when an uploader overwrites a gallery with unrelated content, and both versions would be valid galleries on their own.

• The split gallery will not retain ratings, favorites, comments, or torrents, but will retain tags with 10 or more power from the original chain by default.
  • Specify in your report if the tags from the original chain should not be copied to the split gallery.
• Both the original and split gallery will be locked for updating.

To submit a reversion or split request:

• Step 1: Visit the version of the gallery to be reverted to (not the inferior version).
• Step 2: Press "Report Gallery" and scroll down.
• Step 3: Select "Reversion/Split/Undisown Request" from the drop-down menu.
• Step 4: Enter your e-mail address.
• Step 5: Type "Revert" or "Split *Gallery IDs*" and briefly explain why the gallery should be reverted or split in the "Report Details" box.
• Step 6: Send the report.

While not required, documenting reversion or split requests in the Expunge Discussion and Assistance Thread is encouraged to avoid duplicate requests.

Reasons To Expunge

Already Uploaded

This gallery is a duplicate of an earlier gallery of equal or better quality.

This reason requires a link to the superior or previously uploaded gallery.

• An exact duplicate already exists.
• A superior version already exists (see below).
• Bad-faith rewrite or translation of existing content made to add extremist or politically charged content.^(Ref)
  • A link to the original work without third-party textual edits or redrawing must be provided.
  • This type of expungable content is never reportable. Misusing the report function may lead to a ban.
• The gallery is a reupload of a work that was previously removed by the administration.
  • Content listed on the Do Not Post list should be expunged as forbidden content instead.

Tag: already uploaded

• The gallery is a compilation of works not permitted together:
  • Images from official sets (such as comics, tankoubons, or CG sets) should not be substantially included in other image collections.
  • Chapters from multiple tankoubons should not be combined.
  • Multiple language translations should not be combined in a single gallery.
  • Galleries consisting of ≥ 50% compiled content are considered compilations.
  • The compiled content must already exist in separate galleries before the compilation can be expunged. The source galleries must be linked in the expunge reason; if there are too many to fit, a comment linking to them is required.
    • A compilation may be expunged if at least 80% of its compiled images already exist across the referenced galleries, or if fewer than 8 of its compiled images are missing.

Tag: compilation

• The following compilations are permitted and should NOT be expunged or tagged compilation:
  • Combinations of related chapters from multiple anthologies.
  • Priority 1-2 uploaders combining multiple story-relevant chapters from different tankoubons, anthologies, or other individual releases into a single compilation gallery.
    • The compilation gallery must consist entirely of their own work or translations.

This reason requires a link to the superior gallery.

• A superior version now exists that makes the current gallery inferior. (See here for details)
• Imageset-style galleries uploaded by different users normally coexist. The exception is:
  • If a single uploader has multiple overlapping imageset galleries for the same artist, they may be replaced by one gallery that contains all of their content.
    • This only applies when the galleries share overlapping content but no single gallery already supersedes the others.
    • It does not apply to galleries that were split for a valid reason, such as different sources, page-count limits, file-size limits, or any other sane and clearly labeled split.
    • Images unrelated to the artist may be disregarded.

• A gallery composed of watermarked reproductions advertising a website unrelated to the content's creation, scanning, or translation may be expunged and tagged as replaced, but only when a non-watermarked gallery exists to replace it.

Forbidden/Other

This gallery contains illicit content, content forbidden by the Terms of Service, or other content covered by the expunge guidelines.

• Anything indexed on the Do Not Post list.
  • Do not use this reason for content that is not on that list. If the gallery was previously removed by the administration but is not listed there, expunge the reupload as already uploaded.
  • Minor instances should not be expunged; they should be reported instead, with the image numbers included in the report.^(Ref)
  • Content published by Wani Magazine does not apply, but may still qualify as already uploaded.
• Any real person who cannot be verified as being 18+ years of age.
• Real guro, extreme BDSM, bestiality, or anything else considered obscene by law.
• Mainstream commercial manga, especially non-h (e.g. serialized manga such as Detective Conan, Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon, One Piece, To Love Ru, etc.).
• Anything that does not fit the theme of the site (e.g. memes or unrelated real-life photography).
• Galleries primarily consisting of face swaps of existing content.
  • For this expunge to be valid, the original non face swapped gallery must be uploaded, unless that gallery would itself be expungeable.
    • If the original work is valid content but not uploaded, the first face swap gallery is treated as the original, but may later be replaced by the original if it is uploaded.
  • When it is infeasible to determine the original, such as with many ai generated galleries, the first uploaded gallery is treated as the original.
• Bad-faith irrelevant original content with extremist or politically charged content.^(Ref)
  • This type of expungable content is never reportable. Misusing the report function may lead to a ban.
• Having fewer than 8 images, unless it is a sample, a complete work, or an ongoing story or set.
  • A complete work must contain at least 2 images, or at least 1 double spread page or webtoon.
• Incomplete sample or preview galleries that are clearly intended primarily to drive traffic to an external source. This usually applies when the content is censored or cuts off, and includes a link to where the uncensored or complete content can be bought or viewed, whether in an image or in the comments.
  • This is not generally applicable to galleries that merely reference related external content, such as Pixiv dumps that include preview content for Fanbox and similar.
• Anything listed on the Spam Prevention List.

Tag: forbidden content

• Non-cosplay porn or pictures of real people.
  • If the image(s) are a genuine part of the work (e.g. real-porn ads inside anthologies) they are exempt.
  • Reference images included with the resulting work in the same gallery are exempt. ^(example)
  • Other real-porn images should not be posted, either separately or mixed with drawn images.
    • A gallery containing at least 10 real-porn images, or at least 10% real-porn images, may be expunged.
  • Asian porn uploaded before 2012-02-15 is exempt if otherwise acceptable.^(Ref)
• Generic cosplay (any cosplay not of an established character or series). A few explicit exceptions exist.
• Any images featuring real children are strictly banned and must be immediately reported, regardless of nudity or sexuality.

Defaced

Content has been defaced by adding content-obstructing scanmarks, censorship or advertisements beyond what is present in the original release, or has been intentionally degraded to the point that legibility is affected.

• A mod power of at least 20 is required to start this type of petition.
• "Degraded" includes intentional bad-faith sabotage of the core content, including excessive downsampling, blurring, pixelation, or omission of core content.
  • Scanmarks that do not obstruct content, or promotional pages added after the content pages, do not qualify.
  • Low-resolution scans uploaded before 2022-04-28 are exempt.
• Text added by a third party that is typeset in a way not normal for the work's language across a significant number of pages, or is otherwise intentionally hard to read. For example, vertical text on an English translated gallery.
  • This includes fonts unreadable to most readers of the translated language, such as dingbat fonts.
  • This may also apply to text that is effectively unreadable because it is too small.

Expunge Reason Priority

If a gallery qualifies for multiple expunge categories at once (e.g. a re-uploaded DNP), only one petition should be filed, using the first applicable reason in this order:

Superior Versions

The most common form of superiority is the amount and quality of content in a gallery. Content falls into four classes:

Class	Includes	Desirability
Core Content	Any story images. Variant CGs with both character(s) and background present. Colophons, omake, and original credit pages. Cover pages (included within the set > official promotional website > online stores). Only one source is needed in the set. Translator credit pages. Only one is needed per translation group, even if team members vary by chapter. Advertisements included in the original work.	Always. A gallery missing core content can be replaced by one that includes more or all of it.
Extraneous Content	CG set backgrounds or character portraits. Credit pages not part of the work, other than translator credits. Additions to a translated gallery that were not included in the translator's release, even if the release is incomplete. TODO: hmm? Sketches or unfinished pages from an ongoing work. User-generated clips or screenshots derived from included video content.	Can be included, but cannot replace a gallery that already has all of its core content.
Non-Content	Blank pages or effectively blank pages. Split versions of double pages already included. The same applies to book spines. "Uncleaned" versions of images already cleaned and included. Cropped preview images not directly included in the work, such as Pixiv FANBOX preview images.	Not at all, but not enough on their own to make a gallery expungeable.
Undesirable Content	Cropped versions of existing images not included in the original work. Logos, banners, or advertisements not present in the original release.	Not at all. If the gallery is a digital release without third-party tampering (i.e. a digital RAW) and has been published for more than 7 days, this makes it replaceable by a version without the undesirable content. TODO: does this make sense? how does it interact with the reclaim rule If the undesirable content consists of bad-faith irrelevant extremist or politically charged content, the 7-day grace period does not apply.

The following also make one gallery superior to another:

• Corrected Order
  • Front cover placement.
  • For non-covers, this only applies where image order actually matters, such as stories.

• Better Quality
  • Images should be uploaded as released by the source. Conversions, retouching, leveling, splitting double-pages into singles, or removing original source watermarks are NOT permitted.
  • This includes cleaner scans, no watermarks or scanmarks, better text legibility, fewer folding marks, fewer artifacts, or better visible contrast.
  • If the original source has both watermarked and unwatermarked releases, the unwatermarked release is superior.
  • Single page scans are preferred over double-page scans.
  • A fully complete gallery may replace an incomplete one of better image quality. If both galleries are incomplete in different ways, both remain.^(Ref) TODO: look into this..

• Larger Resolution
  • Upscales do NOT qualify.
• Duplicate Images Removed
• Updated Translations
  • The edits must have been made by the same translator(s).

Uploader Priority

• Priority 1-2 galleries can only be replaced by the same user, or by another member of the same translation team.
• A priority 2 upload cannot be replaced by a reupload from the artist (i.e. priority 1). In such cases, both galleries should coexist.

Trivial Fixes

If a gallery uploaded within the last year is replaced for trivial fixes, the original uploader may reclaim it by updating their gallery to match the superior gallery within 14 days. Trivial fixes are:

• Supplying store or promotional covers
• Fixing page order
• Removing duplicate images

Different Versions

The following versions may coexist:

• Translated and Raw versions
• Rewrites
• Translations by different translators
• Different censorships
• Colored and Uncolored versions
• Uncensored and Censored versions
• Paper scans and Digital versions
  • Digital tankoubons do override paper scans that are not full tankoubons, and vice versa. TODO: incomplete?
• Imagesets uploaded by different users.
  • There is no "more complete" version between imagesets uploaded by different users. The only exception is when one uploader has multiple overlapping imageset galleries for the same artist, as described under Replaced.
  • New imagesets that are identical to already posted ones may still be expunged.

Bad Reasons To Expunge

Bad Reason	Explanation / Proper Action
Gallery contains lolicon, shotacon, toddlercon, incest, abortion, guro, or scat content	Tag appropriately and move on. This also applies to anything else one might find unappealing or offensive.
Miscategorized	Tag with the correct category to help change it. Post in the Renaming/Reclassing Thread for assistance.
Gallery is non-pornographic	Tag appropriately (non-h, western non-h, or non-nude).
Incorrect Name	Make or request a rename petition. Post in the Renaming/Reclassing Thread for assistance.
Incomplete / Sample	Being incomplete or a sample is not, by itself, a valid reason to expunge a gallery. Such galleries may be expunged by replacement when a more complete version exists.
Torrent	A gallery's torrents, or lack thereof, are not relevant to the gallery itself. EHTracker has a separate expunging system.
Themeless	Galleries with no central theme are permitted.
Rewrite / Redraw	Rewrites and redraws are permitted.
AI Generated	AI-generated galleries are permitted. May qualify for the [AI Generated]/[AI生成] indicator.
Mistagged	Post the incorrect tags here.
Deletion Attempts (e.g. replacing a gallery with a white page)	Published galleries CANNOT be removed by the uploader. Attempting to do so may result in a penalty. Never file an expunge petition for galleries attempting to circumvent this rule. Request a reversion instead.
Excessive Updates	Report as "Excessive Updates" and request that the gallery be locked for updates instead. Some exceptions exist. In severe cases, especially when used to dodge a community expunge, please report it in the Spammer Report Thread so a gallery moderator can block further updates.
Uploader / User Request	Uploaders do not have a claim to published galleries. They may disown them to remove association. Copyright claims may only be made by the respective rights holder through the report function. Misrepresenting copyright ownership will lead to a permanent ban.

Underage

The following are the correct actions for underage content:

Gallery Visibility

If a gallery is "Visible" to at least 1 user (besides Tenboro) it is counted as existing in the system and thus any re-uploads should be expunged.

• Private galleries should not be expunged unless it contains forbidden content.

Effects of Expunging

• Expunged galleries stop earning GP. Galleries expunged within 4 hours of being published receive no GP at all.
• Expunged galleries become unsearchable by default and require the advanced search option "Browse Expunged Galleries".

Rewards

Expunging galleries, like renaming them, grants points for the Cleanup Toplist. Users receive more points for starting the petition.

Repeated poor use of expunge petitions may result in the user being banned from using them.

Limits

• An expunge petition on a gallery that has previously been de-expunged by the community or administration may only be started by janitors with the "Galleries Expunging" privilege or gallery moderators.
• An appeal petition for an aged expunge (i.e. one that became active more than 7 days ago) may likewise only be filed by those two groups.
